Icarus and his father Daedalus were imprisoned on the island of Crete. In an attempt to escape, Daedalus crafted two sets of wings for him and his son, using feathers glued together with wax. He warned Icarus not to fly too high, for the wax would melt from the sun, nor too low so the feathers did not get wet from the sea. Overcome by his new found freedom, Icarus soared higher, ignoring his father's instruction. In his flight of ecstasy, the wax began dissolving from the heat of the sun and Icarus plummeted into the sea and drowned.
